Cisco + Splunk Drill-Down Survey

Following Cisco's proposed acquisition of Splunk, ETR quickly launched a drill-down survey to gauge initial customer sentiment, reactions, and perceived impact. The flash survey polled 64 existing Cisco and Splunk clients from large enterprises (1200+ employees), half of which represent Global 2000 organizations. The summary report is linked here, and the full data and detailed results are available on the ETR platform. This article will highlight some high-level takeaways, but you can start your free trial right now to access the full report and data results.

Based on the most recent OCT23 TSIS data, of all ITDMs that cite a spending intention for Cisco within the Information Security and Analytics/B.I./Big Data sectors, nearly half also cite spending with Splunk within these sectors. The mutual client overlap between these two vendors has been growing for a few years, settling in at nearly 50% shared citations. This data highlights the synergistic and complementary nature of the acquisition from a customer overlap perspective.

Based on the survey results, the overall sentiment skewed positively (especially for Cisco), with 66% of respondents stating a Positive or Very Positive view of the deal versus only 13% Negative. Meanwhile, 55% of clients held the same Positive view regarding the acquisition's impact on Splunk's product offerings and roadmap, versus 18% stating a Negative or Very Negative view for the forward-looking Splunk strategy.

Existing clients on both sides overwhelmingly chose expanded security offerings as potentially the most positive impact of the acquisition, with better leverage of existing investments and expanded observability capabilities grouped closely in second and third. However, the low client perception towards the potential for enhanced AI/data capabilities is noteworthy.

The full survey results also provide insight and analysis into how many clients intend to increase services and modules being offered by the combined entity, or even possibly lead them to replace the services altogether. In addition, the survey covers the potential negative impacts to existing clients that the acquisition could pose, greater details into Splunk's pricing and cloud strategy, and much more. With the OCT23 Technology Spending Intentions Survey (TSIS) closing today and Macro Views and TSIS Findings Webinars scheduled for the next two consecutive weeks, now is an opportune time.
