ETR Cloud Infrastructure Survey

Cloud Spend to Grow 67% Next Three Years

ETR Research

| January 05, 2023

ETR conducted a Cloud Infrastructure survey (N = 303) to measure utilization, workloads, and spend on cloud providers. This includes Iaas/PaaS workload share, public vs. private distributions, spend drivers, vendor pervasion, and wallet share across AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure, and other players in the space. In light of the near-term 'lull' in cloud spend, the medium-term outlook (next three years) points to robust growth in spend and workloads shifting to cloud infrastructure with, at the margin, some market share spread across more providers. Annual Spend on Cloud Infrastructure to Grow Significantly over the Next 3 Years

Among all respondents, the median annual spend on IaaS/PaaS is currently $375,000 and is expected to increase to $1,750,000 in 3 years. Looking at Large organizations, spend is currently $750,000 today but is expected to increase to $3,750,000 over that same time period.

Percentage of Workloads on Cloud Infrastructure to Grow ~70% in Three Years

According to survey respondents, 34% of organization workloads are currently on IaaS or PaaS, with expected growth to 42% of workloads on hosted IaaS/PaaS within one year. Over the next three years, 58% of workloads will be on Cloud Infrastructure.

Azure and AWS Still Dominant Cloud Providers with Some Share Spreading

Among other questions not listed here, the survey also asked respondents the percentage of spend across cloud vendors both today and what was expected in 3 years. While AWS and Azure continue to have a dominant market share among all respondents, the data anticipates a share shift toward Google Cloud Platform and other providers over the next few years.
